I'm here!

I am back in Kurdistan! And I’m loving it. I had a wonderful reunion with Harsin and Taib who picked me up from the airport. We then went to Harsin’s brother’s house to sleep because it is right beside the airport, and my flight came in in the middle of the night. The next day I so much enjoyed just spending time with all of them, and doing the regular things I have done with them in the past, like washing their jeep, letting Harsin’s nieces speak Kurdish to me for long periods of time without me understanding, arguing about who will wash the dishes, and of course eating delicious Kurdish food. That whole day I couldn’t stop smiling because I was so happy to be back here. In general, it feels like I never left. There are a few changes, like a new underpass in the city, more abundant electricity, and also it seems like the internet is faster, but this last one may just be my imagination!
These last two days have been busy with the celebration of Nawros, which celebrates the first day of spring and the new year. So, Saturday night everyone went into the main street all dressed up in the traditional clothes. There were probably more than a million people there that evening. The next day we drove to Lake Dukan, as did what seemed like the entire city, for a picnic. I think it took us maybe 3 hours to find a spot because it was so full. People were everywhere. But it was a beautiful day and I enjoyed watching the kite flying, the people dancing, and all the other activity that goes along with picnics.
Thanks for all your encouragement as I’ve been waiting to come back. You know, I thought it would be good to return, but it’s even better than I imagined! I’m sure in a few days culture shock will hit, and soon I will start teaching, which will add some stress, but for now I’m enjoying every minute.
